Pulling Your Boat Out Of The Water For The First Time? What To Know About Winter Prep And Storage

by Georgia Mccoy

If you are a first time boat owner and it's time to pull your boat out of the water for the winter, and then you have to find a place to store it, there are some things that you want to know. You want to make sure that the boat is properly prepped and ready for boat storage, and you want to protect it so that there isn't any damage when you want to drop it in the water in the spring. Get estimates and figure out the following thing.

Fill Mechanical Fluids or Empty Them

Don't leave fluids like oil half empty as the boat sits for the winter. Instead, either top them off so humidity doesn't get into the containers and cause condensation from the liquid, or have the containers completely empties. It's often easiest to top all the fluids off, and then you know the boat has filled fluids and is ready to go at the end of the year.

Get the Boat Cleaned

Spend the money to have the boat professional cleaned or take the time to clean it in great detail on your own. You don't want any water, algae, dirt or other things causing rust, corrosion or staining on the exterior and interior. Clean the boat well and have it waxed before you put it away.

Find a Covered Storage Unit

If you don't want to spend the money or take the time fully winterize the boat, and if there are things that you may want to work on in the winter, get a storage unit. A boat storage unit is great because you don't have to worry about weather damage or theft, and you can get a temperature controlled unit to work on the marine craft in the winter. Call around and get costs for the months that you need, or see if it's the most cost efficient to get a year lease.

You want to remove the battery if you aren't storing the boat in a temperature controlled unit, since the battery can go dead and get damaged. If you are ready to pull your boat out of the water make sure that you care for it properly, to protect the financial investment that you made to purchase the marine craft. Then find a unit to store it and work on anything that needs to be repaired or managed before the next boat season.

About Me

Learning About Moving And Storage Services

Hello, my name is Francesca Kirkland. Welcome to my website about moving and storage services. My most recent move was made much easier by renting a storage unit for the items I did not need immediately. I placed those items in the storage unit, so I could slowly bring them home at my leisure. With this approach, I was able to quickly settle into my new home without getting rid of the items I adore. On my website, I hope to share information that will make this process much easier for you. Please feel free to come by anytime to learn more.
